      <image:title>Flea and worming - Flea Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Flea infestation is one of the most common health problems occurring in cats and dogs, therefore it is important to get into a regular routine of using preventative flea and worm treatment on your pets. Fleas can live without a host for months in warm places such as in bedding and on the sofa. When it first emerges from the pupae the flea begins to search for a host (your pet). After just their first blood meal the flea becomes mature and can lay up to 50 eggs in one day. How do I know if my pet has fleas The best way to check for fleas is to look for flea dirt. Flea dirt is a brown/ black speck in your pet’s coat. You can comb through your pets fur with a flea comb and wipe onto a damp tissue, if the specks turn red or brown your pet has fleas. It is important to note that the absence of flea dirt does not mean your pet does not have fleas. Puppies and Kittens Puppies and Kittens should be treated with both flea and worm treatment monthly up until your pets weight hits maturity. Dogs and cats Once your pets weight has hit maturity your pet can transfer to a 3 monthly treatment. For cats that like to hunt it is recommended to still continue with monthly treatment. Flea and Tick Treatments We have a range of flea and Tick treatment options available, we can have a discussion with you on the best treatment for your pet.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Flea and worming - Worm Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Dogs There are four types of intestinal worms in dogs which are roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and whipworms. Lungworm is also common in the uk, it is not an intestinal worm but it can cause serious disease or even cause fatality. There are numerous ways your dog can catch worms, such as, from their mums both in the uterus and through mum’s milk, walking on and ingesting contaminated soil, eating infected animals and through fleas. Prevention is really important as Intestinal worms are hard to detect. Apart from tapeworm, intestinal worms are hardly seen. Microscopic examination of faeces is usually required to detect eggs. Hookworms, Tapeworms and whipworms can be transferred between cats and dogs. Humans can also catch worms from their dogs, the most common being roundworm. Cats The most common types of intestinal worms on cats are roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm, whipworm. There are also numerous ways that cats can cats worms such as from their mums through milk and other infected cats can pass eggs through their faeces meaning other cats can pick up infection through contaminated grass, food and even water. Cats can also catch worms from prey they may catch. It is important that if your cat likes to catch pray that they are wormed more regularly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Vaccinations - Canine</image:title>
<image:caption>Puppies are vaccinated from 6 weeks of age against a number of potentially fatal diseases. Leptospirosis Parvovirus Canine Distemper Canine Hepatitis Your puppies breeder my have arranged for its first vaccination, so it is important to check and then bring your puppies vaccination certificate to your next appointment. This helps us determine what vaccine course your puppy will need for complete and full protection. Your dogs then receive a yearly booster to keep their immunity, if you do not keep your pet up to date with boosters then they may be at higher risk of catching a potentially fatal disease. Kennel Cough How is kennel Cough spread? Kennel Cough is highly contagious and can be easily spread from one dog to another. When dogs cough, the bacteria and viruses become airborne and can quickly spread to other animals. It can also be transmitted on dog toys, food bowls or other shared objects as well as waterways such as becks and streams. If you think your dog has the illness, keep them away from other animals to limit the spread. The incubation period is between 2 and 14 days, during which time the dog will be contagious. Some dogs can be carriers for months without exhibiting symptoms. If you are worried about your dog, please contact the practice for an appointment, it is best to phone the clinic beforehand and explain you think they have Kennel Cough so they can minimize the risk to other dogs. The vet may be able to prescribe antibiotics for Kennel Cough to target the Bordetella bacteria. If needed, they may also prescribe a canine cough medicine or an anti-inflammatory to sooth your dog’s throat. Vaccination This is the best way to prevent Kennel Cough, and is especially necessary if your dog spends a lot of time with other dogs or goes into kennels. Kennel Cough vaccine lasts 12 months and therefore needs repeating every year. Like any vaccine, the Kennel Cough vaccine doesn’t give 100% guaranteed protection, however it does significantly reduce the chance that your dog will catch Kennel Cough and reduces the symptoms if they do catch it. Most kennels and doggy day care centres will request that every dog has the Kennel Cough vaccination two to three weeks before staying with them. Speak to your vet about adding Kennel Cough into your dog’s vaccine schedule. Puppy Vaccines start from £35.00 per injection Microchips are £15 if given at the time of the vaccinations or neutering. £35 at any other time. Annual Boosters start from £55</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dental care is an important part of taking care of your pets health. Brushing your cat or dogs teeth daily will promote good oral health and prevent dental disease. There are special pet tooth brushes and even pet approved flavoured toothpaste with flavours such as chicken, beef and fish. DO NOT use human toothpaste as this can contain potentially harmful ingredients such as xylitol. Signs of dental disease in your pet includes: Yellow or brown crust on your pets teeth (plaque and tartar build up) Bad breath Red and inflamed gums and in worse cases sore and bleeding gums Tooth loss Change in eating habits Drooling If you notice any of these signs in your pet, book an appointment with your vet for a check up.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With the UK set to have more of us holidaying at home this year, now more than ever it’s important that we keep our pets protected. Before you set off, we’d like to help remind you of a few things. Travelling to new areas of the country can increase the parasite threat risk to your pet. Make sure they’re fully up to date on their protection before you go. Sheep and deer attract and host ticks, so make sure you check your pet and safely remove any ticks after walking in areas nearby. If your dog likes to go for a swim, topical spot-on treatments may wash off. Speak to us about an alternative that works even if your pet gets wet. If your camping by rivers, lakes or near farms infectious diseases such as Leptospirosis could be a risk so it’s important to keep vaccinations up to date. If your dog is likely to come into contact with more dogs than usual, such as going to dog friendly pubs or country fairs, then also speak to us about contagious cough protection (kennel cough).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the team - Sully Swanzdale</image:title>
<image:caption>Sully came in as a stray in June 2016, he had a large abscess on his face (probably from another cat bite), whilst he was here being treated for that his personality shined. All of us here at Swanzdale fell in love with him and when nobody came forward to claim him we decided to keep him as our very own practice cat. Sully is so loving and friendly, he brightens everyone’s day, he even sits on command! Whenever we get a stray kitten Sully is a great ‘uncle’ to them! We might be biased but we think he is the most handsome cat! See some of sully’s adventures below!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sammy started at Swanzdale in January 2005 after leaving school. She had always had an interest in nursing and her love of animals lead her to the opportunity. Sammy qualified as a registered veterinary nurse in 2011 and then travelled and worked in Sydney, Australia, where she worked in a referral hospital. When she returned to Swanzdale she decided to broaden her knowledge in emergency and critical care and gained an extra qualification. Sammy now enjoys working part time as she has three beautiful young children as well as a young dog Ralphie and a cat, Theo. Meet them below! Outside of work Sammy enjoys family weekends and long walks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the team - Matt Purnell - Veterinary Surgeon BVSc MRCVS</image:title>
<image:caption>I grew up in the Vale of Glamorgan just outside Cardiff and decided I'd like to be a vet after spending all my summers working on the local farms. I went to Bristol University and qualified as a veterinary surgeon in July 1994. My first job was in mixed practice in South Wales - after 2 very enjoyable years there I worked for some small animal practices in London, Leeds and Northampton before missing the coast too much so came here to Scarborough in January 2000. In July 2009 I got married to Mags, who grew up on a farm just north of Whitby and now works for the NHS as an applications manager. I enjoy all aspects of small animal veterinary medicine and surgery, having a special interest at present in internal medicine and cardiology. Such cases can be challenging but also hugely rewarding. Recent advances, especially in ultrasound and the development of new drugs, have revolutionised how we can treat such cases. I have also had some memorable nights recently treating seals rescued off the local coast - they are always an interesting challenge to treat! Releasing them on the beach and watching them swim out through the surf is quite special. Outside of work my interests include windsurfing, cycling and snowboarding. Scarborough has an awesome coastline; it's hard to imagine somewhere better for outdoor sports. I joined the Scarborough Paragon cycling club last season and competed in some races with them, but for me the most enjoyable bike rides are along the coast with Mags.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the team - Maureen Winterbottom - Insurance Administrator</image:title>
<image:caption>Maureen has been at Swanzdale Vets since March 2010. She was first a client, then was fortunate enough to be offered the job as a receptionist. Maureen says she was so lucky, and although having many different jobs in England and Saudi Arabia, this job was by far her dream job. She loves our clients and seeing their pets growing up! Since starting Swanzdale, she have moved a bit away from reception work to helping with insurance work for our lovely clients. Maureen has always had pets, as a child, she had snakes, tortoises, rabbits, fish and a little dog. When she was in Saudi Arabia she had 2 cats that were born to ferral cats on her compound. When Maureen came back to England she got the lurchers, and another deerhound. They have unfortunately gone over the rainbow bridge, but she now has 2 lovely big dogs, Seth and Angus. Maureen loves taking them to places where they can stretch their legs and run, so fast, and graceful. Maureen describes them as her gentle giants. Maureen’s hobbies are walking the dogs (obviously goes without saying!!) cooking, entertaining at her lovely home and bringing in food for all of her lovely work colleagues. She also likes to loose herself in a good book, with a glass of wine and some nibbles when she can have a bit of chill out time.</image:caption>
